Whether you are an experienced mechanic or a passionate enthusiast, having a good set of ratchets and sockets is essential for working quickly, cleanly and in full compliance with the tightening torque values recommended by the manufacturers. At Moto Vision, we offer a wide selection of ratchets, sockets and bits from brands renowned for their reliability and durability: BGS Technic, KS Tools and Moto Vision.

Available in different drive sizes (1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" and 1"), in short and long sockets, Torx, Allen or impact versions, our tools are suitable for all types of work, from simple adjustments to a complete teardown of your motorcycle.

How do you choose a ratchet and sockets suitable for motorcycles?

A motorcycle ratchet allows you to tighten and loosen bolts and nuts without repositioning the tool at each movement thanks to its ratchet mechanism. Combined with quality sockets, it ensures precise transmission of tightening torque, limits the risk of rounding bolt heads and protects the fasteners on your bike (brake calipers, clamps, wheel axles, footrest plates, etc.).

The standard ratchet is the ultimate all-round tool. With its ergonomic handle and reversible mechanism, it is suitable for most maintenance tasks: oil changes, brake pad replacement, chain kit replacement, tightening of chassis components.

The flex-head ratchet is particularly useful for reaching fixings located under the fairing, around the engine or behind the radiator. The pivoting head allows you to work at the right angle without putting strain on your wrist.

The articulated ratchet offers even more flexibility in hard-to-reach areas, for example near the swingarm, shock absorber or airbox. It makes many jobs easier without having to remove unnecessary parts.

The compact ratchet is ideal for precision work in very tight spaces, such as inside an engine cover, under the fuel tank or near rearsets. Its reduced size allows you to work where a standard ratchet simply will not fit.

On the socket side, short sockets are perfect when space is limited, while long sockets are recommended for nuts on threaded rods or when you need to extend past a surface, for example on certain engine mounts or fairing fixings.

Impact sockets are designed to be used with an impact wrench or impact driver. Made from chrome-molybdenum steel, they withstand shocks and high tightening torques without cracking. They are ideal for loosening stubborn nuts such as front sprocket nuts, wheel axle nuts or rear sprocket nuts.

Torx and Allen sockets are essential for working on the specific fasteners of modern motorcycles, especially on engine components, chassis parts and certain fairing elements. They provide perfect contact in the screw head and reduce the risk of damaging it.

Technical characteristics of motorcycle sockets: drive sizes, profiles and materials

To choose the right ratchet and socket set, it is important to know the main standards used in motorcycle mechanics:

1/4" drive sizes are intended for small tightening jobs and screws with a small diameter (fairings, controls, small accessories). They offer excellent precision and very good feedback when tightening.

3/8" drive sizes are the best compromise for motorcycles. They allow you to work on most of the screws and nuts on the chassis and engine while remaining compact and easy to handle.

1/2" drive sizes are reserved for heavier tightening operations such as wheel axles, certain swingarm fixings, sprocket or rear sprocket nuts. They can handle higher tightening torques and combine perfectly with impact sockets.

Six-point (6-point) sockets provide maximum contact on the flats of the nut and are recommended for high-torque tightening and seized fasteners. Twelve-point (12-point) sockets make it easier to engage the socket in tight spaces, while still being suitable for normal tightening as long as torque values are respected.

In terms of materials, sockets for ratchets are generally made from chrome-vanadium steel. This material offers excellent wear resistance, good elasticity and protection against corrosion. Impact sockets, on the other hand, are made from chrome-molybdenum steel, which is more resistant to impacts and heavy loads generated by impact wrenches, so you can work safely.

At Moto Vision, you will find click-on sockets for 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4" or 1" drives for maintaining your motorcycle, but also your car, bicycle, quad or truck. This allows you to build a consistent socket set for all your mechanical work.

FAQ – Ratchets and sockets for motorcycles

What ratchet size should I choose for motorcycle maintenance?

For most maintenance tasks, a 3/8" ratchet with a set of metric sockets is the most versatile option. It lets you work on the majority of screws and nuts. A 1/4" ratchet is the ideal complement for small fasteners on fairings, cockpit and controls. A 1/2" ratchet is recommended for heavy-duty tightening (wheel axles, transmission nuts), often in combination with impact sockets.

What is the difference between a standard socket and an impact socket?

A standard socket is designed for hand use with a ratchet or breaker bar and is generally made from chrome-vanadium steel. An impact socket is reinforced, made from chrome-molybdenum steel and designed to absorb the repeated blows of an impact wrench. It is strongly discouraged to use a standard socket with an impact wrench, as it may crack or explode and pose a risk to the user.

Should I choose 6-point or 12-point sockets for a motorcycle?

For heavy tightening or stubborn nuts, it is recommended to use 6-point sockets, which grip more firmly on the flats of the nut and reduce the risk of rounding it off. Twelve-point sockets are very useful when access is limited, because they offer more engagement angles, but they should be used with appropriate torque.

Can I use the same ratchets and sockets for my motorcycle and my car?

Yes, a quality set of ratchets and sockets can be used on a motorcycle, car, bicycle or light commercial vehicle, provided you respect the tightening torques and use the correct socket size for each application. Just make sure you have a set of metric sockets that matches the specific dimensions of each vehicle.

How should I maintain my ratchets and sockets?

To extend the service life of your tools, it is advisable to clean your ratchets and sockets regularly after use, wipe off any oil or grease residue and store them in a box or on a dedicated rack, away from moisture. Lightly lubricating the ratchet mechanism from time to time improves smooth operation and prevents premature wear.

Which sockets do I need to start working on motorcycle mechanics?

To get started, a metric socket set from 8 to 24 mm with a 3/8" drive, complemented by a few long sockets and a set of Allen and Torx sockets, is sufficient for routine maintenance (oil changes, brakes, wheels, chain kit). You can then add impact sockets and a 1/2" ratchet for more demanding tightening jobs.

Equip yourself at the best price for all your motorcycle mechanical work. Standard sockets for hand tools, impact sockets for your power tools, Torx, male or female, 6-point or 12-point: find all the tools you need to work on your bike like a pro at home.
